 18 prisoners who escaped from Edo correctional facility rearrested

The Edo state police command says it has rearrested 18 prisoners who escaped from two correctional facilities in the state during a recent jailbreak.

 

Recall that on October 19, hoodlums who hijacked the #EndSARS protests in the state coordinated two jailbreaks at the Oko correctional facility and Benin correctional facility. Over 2000 inmates escaped from both prisons during the jailbreak.

 

The state commissioner of police, Johnson Kokumo, made the news of the rearrest of the fleeing inmates known, during the parade of some suspects on Wednesday, November 18.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has denied reports that it has suspended the indefinite strike action.

 

This denial comes after a statement started making the rounds online with the subject, "Notice of suspension of ASUU indefinite strike action of all member universities across Nigeria."

ASUU shared a screenshot of the statement on Twitter and called it "fake news".

"The Ministry of Labour and Employment disclosed this on Wednesday night."

The Kano State Police Command has recovered the decomposed body of 8-year-old girl killed and buried in a shallow grave by suspected kidnapper after collecting N500, 000 ransom from her family.

 

Recall that the 24-year old suspect, Habibu Sale kidnapped Asiya Tasiu in Chikawa village, Gabasawa Local Government Area of the state on June 6, 2020, when she was sent on an errand in her Aunty’s place who happened to be the suspect's neighbour.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen at the command's headquarters in Bompai Kano on Tuesday, November 17, said the suspect led a medical team as well as detectives to the scene where he buried the victim.

 

The corpse was exhumed, examined and released to the relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.

 

"Even though that the suspect confessed to have carried out the kidnapping singlehandedly, the Command's Commissioner of Police CP Habu A. Sani, further directed that advance discreet investigation be carried out for more possible breakthroughs and arrest of accomplices." said DSP Haruna.

 236 new cases of Coronavirus recorded in Nigeria

236 new cases of Coronavirus were recorded in Nigeria on Wednesday, November 18.

 

According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC, Lagos recorded 142 new cases while Ogun recorded 19 new cases.

 

Other states with new cases include Kaduna-15 FCT-14 Imo-14 Rivers-14 Plateau-6 Katsina-3 Ekiti-2 Jigawa-2 Oyo-2 Cross River-1 Kano-1 and Taraba-1.

 

Nigeria now has 65,693 confirmed cases of the viral disease. 61,457 patients have been discharged with 1,163 deaths recorded.
