Ondo deputy governor, Ajayi accuses APC of attacking campaign office

Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi who has been having rounds of faceoff with his boss Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of mobilising thugs to attack his campaign office in Akure.

In a statement released by the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Kola Ademujimi and a security personnel attached to his campaign secretariat, Mr. Gbenga Adeyoriju, the APC was accused of being out to cause mayhem before the October 10 governorship election.

Adeyoriju alleged that five thugs came at night in an APC branded vehicle, shot into the air and destroyed the billboard and other valuables on the premises.

He further stated that the thugs used the butt of their guns to destroy the billboard in front of the campaign office and threatened to kill him and his colleague if they made any attempt to stop them.

Ademujimi who also alleged that the APC thugs attacked ZLP members at Idanre during the governor’s campaign in the area on Tuesday September 22, said the attacks on campaign offices of opposition candidates were becoming worrisome.

Ademujimi said;

“Akeredolu ‘s thugs are threatening the lives and property of members of ZLP and those of other parties in parts of the state.

“They destroyed chairs, tables and inflicted injuries on our supporters at their ward meeting in Ile-Oluji yesterday.

“They also destroyed Ajayi’s  billboards at our campaign office in Akure. They destroyed our flags and posters at Idanre during Akeredolu’s/APC ‘s campaign tour of Idanre yesterday.

“They attacked leaders of another party during their local government meeting in Owo yesterday. I think they are out to cause mayhem even before the October 10 governorship election.”

DSS agent killed in shoot-out with gun runners in Plateau State

DSS agent killed in shoot-out with gunrunners in Plateau State

An officer of the Department of State Services in Plateau State, Barrister Muktar Modibbo, has been killed in a shoot-out with arms smugglers.

It was gathered that Modibbo, who also worked with the legal department of the security outfit, died after armed gunmen in a gunrunning ring opened fire at him and other officers during an operation.

A top security source within the DSS, who confirmed the incident on Thursday, told SaharaReporters that the incident occurred during a raid on the criminals' hideout in Shendam Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, the gunrunners, who supply illicit weapons to criminals were initially traced to Qu’anpan Local Government Area by the secret police but the operation was aborted after it was discovered that intel had leaked to the gunrunners, who then swiftly changed location.

The security source said after receiving new intelligence that the arms smugglers were in Shendam, a team was constituted to burst their operation.

The operation was, however, met with heavy shooting from the criminals, who were well equipped with sophisticated firearms and seemed to have had prior intel about the raid. The resulting gunfire led to the death of Modibbo,

“They (gunrunners) also took his weapon, a Galil Automatic Rifle, and a few other things,” the source added.

Fat thighs and big hips could lower chances of early death, says new study

Fat thighs and big hips could lower chances of early death, says new study

A new study found that having broad hips or large hips could help a person to live longer while having a big waist does the opposite.

The researchers looked into data for more than 2.5 million people between three and 24 years.

The new ground-breaking study was recently published in the British Medical Journal.

Dr Tauseef Ahmad Khan is the study author from the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto in Canada.

The study also found that every extra 4 inches (10cm) of waist size was associated with an 11% higher chance of dying prematurely.

Dr Khan said: "People should be more concerned about their waist rather than focusing only on weight or BMI.

"Waist is a better indicator of belly fat and while one cannot target where one loses fat from, losing weight through diet and exercise will also reduce waist and therefore belly fat.

"Belly fat is the fat that is stored around the organs in the abdomen and its excess is linked to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

"Therefore, having more belly fat can increase the risk of dying from these diseases."

However, Dr Khan says hip fat is considered beneficial and thigh size is an indicator of the amount of muscle.

Their findings suggest that thigh and hip circumference were "inversely associated with all-cause morality risk".

Each 10cm increase in hip circumference was associated with a 10% lower risk of death from all causes.

A 62-year-old man has been charged with the rape of a child in woodland on the Isle of Wight, England.

It is alleged that shortly after 3pm on the afternoon of Monday, August 31, a young girl was abducted and raped in woodland in Fort Victoria Country Park.

Police have confirmed the victim was just three years old. Officers were seen cordoning off public toilets and nearby woodland after the alleged attack.

Medway, from the Freshwater area, has been charged with rape of a child under the age of 13, police said.

On Thursday, September 24, Medway was remanded in custody by Southampton magistrates and will appear at Newport Crown Court on October 26.

Hampshire Police are asking anyone who has any information that could help their investigation to come forward.

The force is also urging members of the public not to "speculate" about the horrific allegations to avoid jeopardising a potential trial in the future.

A statement from Hampshire Police said: "We appreciate that this case has been of understandable concern to the local community, however, we ask you not to speculate on the circumstances, as this can have an impact on proceedings later down the line when evidence is presented to a jury.

"We have received an overwhelming response from the public in relation to this case and would encourage anyone with any concerns related to our appeals to call 101."
