Don’t expect suspension of strike soon - ASUU tells students and parents

Don?t expect suspension of strike soon - ASUU tells students and parents

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday November 17, told students and their parents not to expect suspension of its ongoing strike soon.

The union’s Abuja Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Theophilus Lagi made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja and also told lecturers to seek alternative means of survival.

Lagi who accused the federal government of not showing commitment in resolving the issues that necessitated the ongoing industrial action, further stated that they will continue with the strike until the government bows to the union's demands.

They also accused the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige of turning the wheel of progress backwards by setting ASUU on a collision course with other presure groups in the university.

He said;

“Today, we wish to let Nigerians, especially our students and parents know that there is no hope in sight to ending or suspending the ASUU strike that has lingered for several months as government is yet to show serious commitment towards addressing our core demands.

“Our members have been advised to seek other legitimate means of survival as the government has not released salaries withheld since February, 2020.

“One needs not be a psychologist to understand the behaviour and recent utterances of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige. The Minister has  clearly shown his disdain for Nigerian academics and has failed to play the role of an unbiased umpire in moderating the imbroglio.

“He has now become the spokespreson to the Accountant General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance, instead of finding solution for lecturers to get back to work,he is turning the wheel of progress backwards by setting ASUU on a collision course with other presure groups in the university. Clearly Dr Ngige is on a war part with ASUU.

“As men of letters, we would have elected to ignore Senator Chris Ngige’s deliberate misinformation and deceit. So, this response is more to straighten the record than it is to massage the minister’s ego.

‘’In one of his comedies of error, Ngige told the nation that the striking lecturers had been paid salaries up to date when he knew university lecturers were being owed salaries for between nine and six months for no just cause.

‘’In another fit of treachery, the Minister during a recent budget defense at the National Assembly, while upholding the existence of University Autonomy Law, attempted in vain to redefine its provisions.

“In the past few weeks, for instance, Ngige has said one thing when he met with the union and a different thing on the same subject in interviews with the media. This double character of a Minister and a purported negotiator in the face-off should be a source of worry to not only the body of Nigerian students but also parents who patronize public universities as the minister’s untoward attitude is undermining the reopening of these schools.

“In furtherance of his intimidation of the lecturers and misinformation of the public, Ngige argued that autonomy could not hold in the prevailing circumstance. On this, we would like to educate the Minister that public universities in Nigeria are creatures of law as each university is established by an Act enacted by the National Assembly.’’

Kidnappers reportedly demand N270m ransom for abducted ABU students

Kidnappers reportedly demand N270m ransom for abducted ABU students

The gunmen who kidnapped students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday, November 15, have demanded a cumulative sum of N270 million as ransom.

DailyTrust reports that a student of the university, Dickson Oko, who was able to escape being kidnapped, claimed that the kidnappers had reached out to the families of the kidnapped students and are demanding N30 million ransom on each.

Oko, who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, said 12 of them were on the bus but nine students were kidnapped. The students were on their way to the French Village in Lagos for their language immersion programme when the bus they were travelling in got attacked by gunmen who blocked both lanes of the Akilubu-Gidan Busa axis on the highway and opened fire on motorists.

The driver of the bus, Mohammed Nurrudeen, who escaped unhurt, said they were trapped sometime around 3:10 pm at Busa, a few kilometres after Akilubu.

“Immediately they came on the road, the armed men opened fire. They shot two of the students in the bus and we noticed that they had erected a roadblock behind us and another in front. There was another roadblock mounted on the other lane. So the only thing I could do was to stop.”

Nurudeen said with gunshots directed at their bus and other vehicles ahead of them, he suggested to the students to brace up and run, adding

“I opened the door and crawled into the grass. The gunshots were everywhere; the person on the passenger’s seat in front also came down even though he was shot. I crossed onto the other lane. I never knew I would survive because there were gunshots directed at me.”

He said he saw the gunmen open fire at a Gulf car with people in it. He said the attack, which scared him, aided his decision to run.

“I can’t say how many people were killed but what scared me was how they opened fire at the Gulf car even though it had stopped and there were people in it. But the bandits opened fire and kept shooting. That was when I decided that it was better they killed me while on the run than face a gruesome fate in the vehicle,” he added.

Mohammed, however, explained that when he returned to the roadside, soldiers had arrived and engaged the bandits in a shootout, adding that he went to Katari Police Station to make a statement as soon as the situation calmed down.

“While making the statement, one of my passengers, she had a baby, came and said that she couldn’t believe that I survived because they all thought I had been hit by bullets.

She was trembling and told the police that when the soldiers came, the bandits formed two groups; one went with several kidnapped victims into the bush, while the other bandits stayed back to engage the security agents in an attempt to distract them.”

According to Mohammed, two other students had been found, including the student on the passenger’s seat who sustained a gunshot wound, adding that “the woman confirmed that the bandits left with nine of the students while we took the three who escaped to the hospital and I came back to Kaduna with them on Monday.”

A female relative of one of the kidnapped students told the Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service that the kidnappers have reached out to the family demanding for N30 million per student. She pleaded with the kidnappers to have mercy and release the victims, saying they were only students.

"We're going to have an orderly transfer from this administration to the next one" - US Senate leader McConnell

Top Republican and the US Majority Senate leader, Mitch McConnell has seemingly admitted defeat in hopes of a Trump re-election, stating there'll be "an orderly transfer from this administration to the next one"

The General Services Administration administrator has not stated Joe Biden won the election, and without doing that Biden can't get the necessary logistical support his team will need in transitioning to the White House.

Trump is meant to vacate the White House in January 2021 but until Biden is certified as the winner of the election, Trump still has a slim chance of fighting the electoral results in court.

When asked why the General Services Administration administrator has not issued a letter of "ascertainment" that would determine the likely winner of the race and formally begin the transition process, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the next president would be inaugurated on time.

"We’re going to have an orderly transfer from this administration to the next one,” said McConnell. “What we all say about it is, frankly, irrelevant.”

McConnell declined to comment on fellow Republican senator South Carolina's Lindsey Graham’s actions where he called up state officials in states Trump lost.

According to Mitch McConnell, states rather than federal officials should handle elections.

"I have emphasized that one of the beauties of the American election system is we have 50 separate ways to conduct them.”

“Every state is different. It ought to stay that way. We ought not to try to nationalize how we handle elections,” he added. “States know how to do it.”

He then chided the press for not writing about “one of the great success stories of the current administration” which he asserted was “the coordination between Homeland Security and secretaries of state in charge of conducting elections all around the country.”

“I know when things don't happen they tend not to make a headline, but [there is] no indication any foreign intervention succeeded,” said McConnell.
“The elections were smoothly conducted.”

“But the decision as to how the elections end happened in 50 different places,” he added. “So next we're going to say election certification in the states that are still close, and in doubt — in Georgia and Pennsylvania and Michigan and Nevada. Once those certifications occur, if they occur, based upon litigation that's being tried in various places, those will be final. The Electoral College will meet in December, and the inauguration will be on Jan. 20.”

Buhari won’t allow repeat of #EndSARS protests —Minister

The Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, on Tuesday, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has promised to do whatever it takes to forestall a repeat of the #EndSARS protests that rocked parts of the country recently.

Dingyadi disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the National Security Council presided over by the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He further quoted the President as promising more support for the nation’s security agencies to maintain peace.

The minister said, “In his concluding remarks, Mr President thanked members for the efforts they are making in maintains peace and assured members that he will do whatever it takes to support security agencies in providing peace in the country.

“Mr President assured Nigerians that he will do whatever it takes to ensure that a repeat of ENDSARS protests does not occur in Nigeria again.

“Mr President reassured all that all stakeholders will be involved in the process of maintaining peace in the country, particularly the youth, community leaders, traditional rulers, politicians, public servants, religious leaders etc.

“The Federal Government will continue to maintain its bureaucratic, humane, and just postures in handling security matters in the country.”

When asked if the President’s promise not to allow a repeat of EndSARS protests means his regime will be clamping down on prospective protesters, the minister replied, “What we are saying is that government will continue to dialogue, it will continue to listen and will continue to carry all stakeholders along in ensuring that there is no repeat of what happened that led to the destruction of a lot of properties, public and private, individuals in this country.”

Dingyadi said the meeting which was convened to brief the President on the security situation in the country, noted with concern the increasing cases of armed banditry particularly in the North West and North-East.

He said the meeting agreed that security agencies should be more proactive in dealing with the situation in a more decisive manner.

“The meeting noted the need to pay greater attention to the police in the discharge of its functions to maintain peace in the country, in the areas of equipment and modern technology.

“The meeting thanked the President for the concern which he has shown in repositioning the police to perform more effectively,” he added.

Although the minister said security agencies have targets and timeline to deliver, he did not disclose the details of the target and the timeline.

He also claimed that bandits have already been degraded, adding that they are only engaging on “hit-and-run kind of tactics.”

He also said there was no truth in the report that policemen have abandoned the Abuja-Kaduna Road.

While saying that policemen and soldiers are embarking on joint patrol of the road, the minister agreed that efforts must be intensified to make the road safe for travellers.

Dingyadi also said he reported to the council that policemen have returned to their duty posts after their withdrawal in the wake of the protests.

He however admitted that policemen cannot be everywhere at the same time.

Vice-President Yemi Osinabjo, relevant ministers, and all heads of the nation’s security agencies attended the meeting with Buhari.

Schoolboys hold fake wedding to avoid coronavirus rules and throw end-of-year party

Schoolboys hold fake wedding to avoid coronavirus rules and throw end-of-year party

Two schoolboys tried to stage a fake wedding so they could hold a huge end-of-year party.

The students from Sydney, Australia, wanted an after-party for their Year 12 formal.

Due to Coronavirus restrictions, the number of party goers would have been limited to just 30. But the boys realised weddings are allowed up to 150 guests.

So the two teenagers from Sydney Grammar School decided to throw a fake wedding ceremony between them to have more people together, according to 7NEWS.

By disguising the afterparty as a wedding it would have meant they could hold the huge celebration they wanted.

But their plot unravelled after a picture of the pupils apparently swapping vows was shared on social media.

The photos quickly went viral and their parents heard of the plan and quickly raced home to shut the party down.

They reportedly only heard about the plot when a neighbour texted them to congratulate them about their son’s wedding.

In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, the parents claimed it was "clearly a silly teenage idea".

The statement said: "No legally binding ceremony took place and we shut down the planned private celebratory event as soon as we found out about it, and thankfully, nobody was put at risk."

Both students have since apologised for the prank.

No fines were issued to the boys as no party went ahead in the end.

Trump fires director of Homeland Security agency who rejected his election conspiracy theories

US President Donald Trump, has fired Chris Krebs, the Department of Homeland Security official who had rejected Trump's claims of widespread voter fraud.

Trump announced on Twitter he was firing Chris Krebs, the director of the Cyber security and Infrastructure Security Agency, staring Krebs' statement that said there "is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised." was the reason he was fired.

"The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud," Trump said in a tweet.

"Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency."

Trump is contesting the legality of the election which sees Joe Biden projected to win the Electoral college by over 300 votes while giving Biden an over 3 million lead in the Popular votes .

My only sin in PDP was refusing to castigate Buhari - Governor Umahi

My only sin in PDP was refusing to castigate Buhari - Governor Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State who formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday November 17, has disclosed that his only sin in his former party was not castigating President Buhari.

Umahi averred that he will never do such because that is his family's character.  He added that nobody either in APC or PDP will ever say he leaked any information.

The Governor said;

“Every man runs his destiny. One thing I have promised is that I will never castigate PDP; just like in PDP, my only sin is that I refused to castigate Mr President and till thy kingdom come, I will not do that because that is my family character.

“But those who don’t have character, they were very suspicious of me because I don’t castigate the President, that I could be leaking information of PDP.

“What nonsense is that? I came from a known family and a place where there is character. So, I have got a character; nobody either in APC or PDP will say that whoever discusses anything, I have to go and leak it. To leak it for what? Is it for money, is it for fame?”

Umahi who stated that he has no regret, affirmed that he is contended with being a two-term governor.

He added;

“Let it be known to all that nobody promised me anything, let it be known to all that I moved because of injustice, and I have no regret about that.

“Some people say I will regret this movement, I laugh at them; as if they saw God, as if they are my God. I am satisfied being a businessman, I am satisfied doing my businesses and that is all.”

My friend Umahi wants to be President - Governor Wike

My friend Umahi wants to be President - Governor Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike has reacted to the defection of Governor David Umahi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike who stated that they are not surprised with Umahi's defection, added that the Ebonyi state Governor left the PDP because he wants to be the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023 and not injustice meted on the South East by the opposition party as claimed.

Noting that Governor Umahi has a right to move to the APC, Wike however averred that his Ebonyi counterpart was unfair to the opposition party which gave him its governorship ticket in 2015 against all odds and repeated the same feat in 2019.

He said;

“My friend, Umahi wants to be president. There is no problem with that. You have a right to be president. Nobody can stop you. You are educated. You have been a governor for two terms, so you are qualified to say I want to be president of Nigeria.

“But, that does not mean, that because you want to blackmail your party, and tell lies to the people you are leaving the party because of the injustice meted against the South-East, that is not correct."

Wike also asked the Ebonyi governor to retract his statement of PDP not being fair to the South-East, stressing that under the PDP, the South East has produced Senate Presidents, national vice party chairman, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

He also alleged that it was erroneous for Governor Umahi to accuse the PDP of injustice, when he had unilaterally ‘imposed’ his younger brother as South-East Zonal Vice Chairman of the PDP.

Wike added;

“In life, power is sweet, but conscience is important. It is most offensive and insulting for a man to lie against his party because of power.

“My reaction to Governor Umahi’s defection is not that he has no right to defect, but to say he is defecting because of injustice meted to the South East, that is insulting to the South East."

Also pointing out that the APC has not revealed where it will zone its presidential ticket, the Rivers state Governor urged the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee of the PDP to take decisive steps to ensure the PDP does not die in Ebonyi State.
