Heavy rainfall claims 25 lives in Jigawa, Governor Badaru says

Badaru says the government will support victims of the flood who lost their property.

No fewer than 25 people died and more than 51,000 houses destroyed by heavy rainfall in Jigawa.

Gov. Muhammad Badaru, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Dutse.

The governor, however, said he could not immediately give the exact number of casualties, adding, "You see to put the number of how many people died, you see this keep increasing.

"The last count we had was between 20 and 25. Some are yet to be verified whether it was as a result of flooding or other issues, whatever it is even if it is one life that is lost as a result of flooding is very serious," he said.

Badaru, who condoled the families of those who lost their lives and sympathised with those whose property were destroyed in the current flash floods assured them of his government support.

He noted that not many people died in the flash floods, adding that some died as a result of heavy rainfall which led to sudden collapsed of their houses

.What we have seen today is not the traditional flooding, we are still praying and hoping that Hadejia valley would still be intact until the end of the rainy season.

"A lot of embankment had been built up around the valley. In the last five months we have been putting embankments in places where floods occurred.

"This year, we have experienced less flooding in those areas where we have provided mitigation.

"Most of the flooding this year were in places where we didn't envisage but we will still analyse.

"This year, there is heavy downpour and if you analyse with the number of houses that have gone down, I think more than 51,000 houses destroyed, but we are still counting.

"The instant rain come up and poured, and because of the fact that the houses cannot keep off and they keep going down.

"And in some cases is not about flooding but heavy rainfall that destroyed the mud houses that our people have and that has been the trend this year," Badaru said.

He said the flood submerged many towns and areas which were too numerous for him to visit but assured to support the affected communities as soon as he gets a comprehensive report from the committee set up to ascertain the damage.

"I think even our estimates of 51,000 houses is based on the towns that we have been to but I am sure by the time our team comes back from the fact finding mission and going round the whole of the state we will get the exact number," the governor said.

According to him, 21 persons lost their lives in the mud houses while four others drowned in the rivers.

"It is really tragic and we are putting a lot of mitigating mechanism to checkmate it."

The governor commended the Federal Government for the construction of embankment on Hadejia River and other support programmes to control flooding in the state.

He added that the Federal Government was also supporting the state to arrest the unfortunate incident through its ecological fund,.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that arrangements were on the top gear to relocate some of the communities in flood prone areas of the state.

The affected communities continue to experience loss of lives and property every year due to flood and heavy rainfall in the state.

Teenage Covid-19 patient 'is raped by an ambulance driver while being taken to hospital' in India

A 19-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an ambulance driver on her way to the hospital after she tested positive for COVID-19. The teenage girl was reportedly attacked by a man known as V Noufal, 29, while on their way to the Firstline Covid Treatment Centre in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India, on Saturday night, September 5.

Noufal was arrested on Sunday morning September 6, after the victim told a staff of the hospital about the alleged incident when she arrived in Pandalam. After his arrest, Police said he had not obtained the mandatory clearance certificate before joining as a driver.

Health Minister KK Shailaja described the attack in Kerala as 'shocking' and 'inhuman'. A health department official told The Indian Express that the driver is usually sent alone to a particular locality to pick up patients to limit the exposure of health workers. 

The official said: 'The driver’s chamber is partitioned and no other staff or nurse accompanies the driver while ferrying patients to hospital.  'This is to limit the exposure of health workers to infected persons. In rare cases, if the patient is serious, we send a nurse. In this case, both patients were stable.' 

The attack is the latest in a series of high profile sexual offenses in India. Last week, a three-year-old girl was raped and strangled in the Lakhimpur Kher district, of Uttar Pradesh.

Offa Robbery: Sick armoury officer, Inspector Kayode Oke was shot dead in his sleep - Court

The daredevil armed robbers that raided the ancient Offa town, Kwara State on April 5, 2018, killed the officer in charge of the armoury Inspector Kayode Oke (PICTURED) right inside his office while sleeping.Testifying before the Kwara State High Court on Tuesday, September 8, at the continuation of hearing on the Offa robbery case, the officer who is the station guard and a sergeant, Sulaiman Mahmoud (PW6), said that the armoury officer, Kayode, was ill and on medication, sleeping in his office, when the robbers struck at about 4:45 pm.

Mahmoud, who said that he lost his AK-47 rifle during the Offa robbery incident, added that the gun dropped while scaling the police station fence to escape superior firepower of the hoodlums.“I was at the entrance of the police station when I suddenly heard gunshots from Captain Cook junction. I ran into the police station shouting to alert others that armed robbers were approaching our station. I ran for cover shooting to scare the robbers away," he narrated.

"Suddenly, my gun got hooked and no one to assist me. I ran into the escape route of the station with my rifle. As I was about scaling the fence, my rifle fell off me and I couldn’t go back to retrieve it as the armed robbers already took over the station. After the shooting subsided, I came back to meet my colleagues crying. I went to the place where my rifle fell off me, but I didn’t see it again,” he said.

Mahmoud also said during cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mathias Emeribe, that Inspector Kayode Oke was killed in his office while sleeping, as he was on medication for his illness.The court on Tuesday also ordered the prison authorities to see to the medical complaint of the first accused person in the Offa robbery case, Ayoade Akinnibosun, who the defence counsel said needed medical attention.

The defence counsel had told the court that Akinnibosun was having severe pains on his wrist, ankle and right lap.The counsel added that Akinnibosun, “had a swell on his right lap close to his scrotum. The pain has been constant, repeated and severe. He needs a thorough medical examination.”

The presiding judge, Justice Halima Saleema, also overruled the objection to the admissibility of the death certificate raised by the defence counsel.The defence counsel had objected to the admissibility of the document, saying that the documents are not coming from the maker and thus not admissible.

While adjourning the Offa robbery case to December 22, 2020, Justice Saleema agreed to a long adjournment moved by the prosecution counsel, Bola Razaq Gold.Gold had said that the police officer, who is the prosecution’s next witness, Danjuma Mohammed Garba, was away in Somalia on a training course and would complete the programme on December 15, 2020.

The prosecution counsel had said that the video recordings and CCTV shots of the Offa robbery incident in the affected banks ought to be played and analyzed in court by Garba before any other witness would give evidence.“Without tendering that documentary evidence through him, our other witnesses would not be able to give evidence,” he said.

All the accused: Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salahudeen Azeez and Niyi Ogundiran were present in court on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old trained with his teammates and even hugged PSG teammate Presnel Kimpembe before touching and larking around with Lille star, Jonathan Ikone.He was also pictured stretching in the middle of a group of teammates before he was sent home with immediate effect after returning a positive result. 

The France national football team is yet to address those he got in contact with, but Mbappe will miss France's Nations League clash with Croatia later today. A statement from the FFF read: "Kylian Mbappe will not participate in France-Croatia, Tuesday evening at 8.45pm at the Stade de France.

"The result of his Covid-19 test, carried out by Uefa on Monday morning, was found to be positive, he was placed away from the group after receiving the results, at the end of training, before regaining his home in the evening.‌"Like the entire delegation, Kylian Mbappe had undergone a test prior to meeting. The result was negative, like the one last Wednesday, at the request of Uefa."

A cartoon critical of First Lady Aisha Buhari over her conduct regarding the recent wedding of one of her daughters has been described as 'unfair' by her office.

Hanan Buhari got married on Friday, September 4, 2020 with videos of the ceremony shared by scores of people on social media.

Many people criticised the ostentatious display of wealth as insensitive to the plight of Nigerians who have agonised over the recent increase in the price of fuel, and electricity tariff.

Aisha's distribution of images from the ceremony prompted a cartoon drawing from Daily Trust that suggested that she was rubbing it in the face of Nigerians who are suffering.

The First Lady's spokesperson, Aliyu Abdullahi, told BBC Hausa on Monday, September 7 that she tried to make the event as low key as possible to prevent the backlash that eventually came.

He said, "The cartoonist did not put Mrs Buhari in the right perspective with his drawing.

"Her daughter's wedding has nothing to do with the present hardship Nigerians are facing.

"And let me tell you that the first lady told all her aides not to make the wedding a big one because it was going to be a low key event."

He said the First Lady shared photos from the ceremony simply to thank well wishers and was not done with insensitivity to the current plight of Nigerians.

'Oshiomhole not my godfather,' Ize-Iyamu insists ahead of Edo election

 The Edo governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has once again dismissed notions that former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, is his political godfather.

Oshiomhole was Ize-Iyamu's bitter enemy when he lost the election to current governor, Godwin Obaseki, four years ago but is now one of his biggest assets going into the September 19, 2020 election.

When quizzed about the relationship between the two during an interview on Channels TV on Monday, September 7, Ize-Iyamu said his long political history with Oshiomhole shows he's not dependent on him.

He said the propagation of such claims just because the former governor is a big figure in his campaign is meaningless because he has the right to campaign for his candidate just like everyone else.

"Even his first term when he came in (as governor), he sought my assistance. Second term, when he was going in, I was his DG.

"So, how can I be his godson? It does not make sense," Ize-Iyamu said.

Despite rejecting that Oshiomhole is his benefactor, the APC candidate agreed that the former APC national chairman is a 'major factor' on his chances at the polls.

He said the spread of Oshiomhole's legacy during his eight years at the reins will help him win more votes.

"Those people he helped (as governor) with schools, water, roads are going to vote.

"Even if they're voting for me because of what Oshiomhole did, that is still a serious vote for APC," he said.

Ize-Iyamu also accused candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Obaseki, who is seeking a second term, of being arrogant with his utterances.

He expressed confidence that he'll beat the incumbent governor with an overwhelming margin.

"I will not lose. This is God's time. I will win overwhelmingly."

Erica also briefly spoke about how her involvement with Kiddwaya may have negatively influenced her game while hinting on some of the qualities that first attracted her to him.

"What drew me to Kiddwaya was we have some similarities. We are both carefree, we are both crazy and kind of complete babies too and our conversations flowed naturally", Erica said.

On her rift with Laycon, the reality star admitted she may have gone out of line but things went sour between them cause he tried to taint her image after a one time, drunken attempt to kiss him.

 Spanish La Liga president, Javier Tebas, has insisted that the Spanish league is not fighting with Lionel Messi after the superstar announced his intention to remain at Barcelona weeks after he revealed he wanted to leave the club.

33 year old Messi's future at Camp Nou has been the subject of much speculation since his decision to hand in a formal transfer request on August 25.After suffering an unsucessful 2019-20 campaign which ended in abject failure for the Blaugrana, he wanted to trigger the release clause in his contract which allows him to leave the club at the end of any season.

La Liga publicly insisted that Messi's existing deal remains valid, meaning he could only depart if his original €700 million (£624m/$823m) buy-out clause was met, with the release clause in question having technically expired back in June .

After Messi realized he would lose in any legal battle against the club, he made a  U-turn, revealing in an interview that he does not wish to be drawn into a legal dispute against the club he has played for since he was 13.

"Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million clause, and that this is impossible," he said.

La liga chief, Tebas has now come out to defend La Liga's stance on Messi's contract situation.

Speaking to Corriere Della Sera on Monday September 7, he said: “Mine was not a war against Messi. I would have done the same if it had been Pepito Perez or any other player in our league. 

"As a league we have a duty to defend legality, justice: contracts must be respected. Always. Whether your name is Messi or Pepito Perez

"Personally, I think there has been no battle with Messi and his entourage. I have a special esteem for Leo, I love him, he is the history of our football in the last 20 years. How could I have gone to war with him? 

"I repeat: my intervention was aimed only at respecting the contracts. It is clear that with being Leo involved, the story assumed enormous media dimensions."

“Although [Messi's] lawyers said otherwise, the contract was clear. One part was decontextualised, this led them to error. 

"In the end, I'm happy with Messi's decision to avoid legal conflicts. He will continue to play on the team of his life. I hope that relations will return to normal."

Messi could still end up leaving Barca in 2021, when his current deal expires.

Asked to confirm whether Messi can leave next year, Tebas responded: “It will be his decision. The contract allows it."

 Daddy Freeze has reacted after Pastor David Ibiyeomie cursed him for allegedly insulting his mentor Bishop David Oyedepo.Pastor Ibiyeomie called Freeze a bastard and said a number of other things as he insulted the media personality, who is known for tackling prosperity preachers. Ibiyeomie also cursed the day Freeze was born and threatened him 

Reacting via his YouTube channel, Freeze accused Ibiyeomie of racism, discrimination, and threat to life.Freeze began in his response, "Even if you have a gun to my head, I'll still speak the truth"He said he was "devastated" by Pastor Ibiyeomie's video because of the "content" and he went on to reveal what about the content troubled him.

Freeze said he didn't insult Bishop Oyedepo as Pastor Ibiyeomie claims, but simply drew the religious leader's attention to a part of the bible.Freeze said: "Correcting the scripture is not an insult. Christ was criticized, Peter was criticized, Paul was criticized, even the Pharisees were criticized, so there's no way you're going to preach a message from the scriptures that you'll not get criticisms."

Condemning Ibiyeomie for likening him to the Somalians in a derogatory manner, Freeze said: "I find it very devastating that just to get to me, Pastor Ibieomie will drag the whole Somalia nation. I'm very proud to associate myself with Somalians because they're a beautiful people. It is hate speech to undermine them with derogatory words, like there's anything wrong with the Somalians."Freeze also drew the attention of the public and the law enforcement agencies to the threat to his life.

He said: "Pastor Ibiyeomie, I don't know if you realize that a threat to life is a criminal offence.... If anything happens to me, I hope you know who to hold responsible."He also condemned Ibiyeomie for undermining the broadcasting profession just to undermine his source of income.

Freeze said: "You went on again to undermine the noble profession of broadcasting. I'm a proud broadcaster for the last 25 years. I've dedicated my life to this beautiful, noble profession..."He said he takes his children to the radio station to watch him work with the hopes that one or two would take over the profession. He added that broadcasting isn't something to be ashamed of.

"I think you should apologize to every journalist, every broadcaster, for undermining our work,' Freeze told ibiyeomie.Reacting to being called a "half-caste" by the pastor, Freeze said the word "half-caste" is "racist" and he asked that Ibiyeomie apologizes to victims of racism.

Fuel Price Hike: Police warns against protest in Borno

The Borno State Police command has warned against any form of protests in the state amid the controversy that has trailed the increase in fuel price and electricity tariff. The police command in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer Mr. Edet Okon, stated that there is still a ban on public rallies in the North East state. According to the police, the protest might disrupt the hard-earned peace in the state. 

The statement read; 

“The attention of Borno State Police Command has been drawn to plans by groups with sinister motives to disrupt the hard-earned peace in the state through violent protest purportedly against the hike in fuel and electricity prices and against working conditions of the state civil servants and N-POWER beneficiaries.

 “In view of the above, the Commissioner of Police, Borno State, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu wishes to state that such protest will not be condoned/allowed by the Command as this may sabotage efforts of the federal/state governments and that of the security agencies to ensure that the emerging peace and security in the state is sustained.“The command is using this opportunity to remind members of the public that there is a ban on public rallies and all forms of procession in the state, and this ban, at the moment still subsists.

“The command advises that all forms of grievances should be brought to the table for all parties to chew on.“It is pertinent to note that the organised labour in the state, via a press release dated September 7, 2020 and titled: “The organised labour will not be distracted,” has disowned and frowned at any form of agitation/protest.”
